Pain

Its been awhile since ive felt this way. Its raw and deep. I wish it would go away but i guess i need to grow through the pain. It reminds me of my humanity and frailty.

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."

Its times like these i wish i could fast forward things, to a better time, a better place but I want to see the present with a sense of purpose and to be able to perceive its beauty.

Man I haven't posted like this since May. Haha

The Perfect Boiled Egg

In preparation for our movie picnic, i decided to have some boiled eggs to complement the balsamic vinegar mushrooms i made. Now if you're gonna do something, you might as well do it great, not just good.

So i googled out "the perfect boiled egg" and came across an incredible recipe just to make a boiled egg which is oft taken for granted. So heres the recipe:

1. place eggs in pot with the water level 1 inch above the eggs and bring to boil
2. just as it begins to boil, turn off fire and leave for 17 mins
3. remove eggs and place in ice cold water for 2 mins
4. bring original pot to boil again
5. remove eggs from ice water and place in boiling water for 10 secs
6. remove from boiling water and place in ice water for 30 mins

That is the standard to achieve the perfect boiled egg.

I know what you are thinking. Was it worth it and why isnt he studying?? I shall answer the first. It was worth the hour i spent including deshelling the eggs. The eggs were indeed perfect. No grey colouration and the yolks were bright succulent yellow and they were soft and moist, not the dried out pale yellow yolks of mass produced eggs.

So go ahead, next time you have a spare saturday afternoon and attempt the Perfect Boiled Egg Challenge.

Rainy Mondays

Woke up to a cool rainy Monday morning. Did my QT, read the papers and im gonna drink my coffee. "October Skies" is playing in the background and its proving to be a good start to the day. I think this laidback take it easy part of school life is something im gonna miss when i start work. Regimentation and me mix as well as oil and water. But i'll leave that gripe for another time.

Sent me bro off last night. Love going to the airport, but it always stirs the travel bug within me. So many places not seen and traversed. It was a good time of catching up with Ang-eh and Clarence. Till Dec, adios bro and may the Lord watch over you and keep you. May His face shine on you and give you peace.

Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond

Came across this song recently. Reminds me of my time at Loch Lomond in Scotland when the guide played it on the bus when touring the loch. One of the interpretations of this old song is:

"the song is sung by the lover of a captured rebel set to be to be executed in London following a show trial. The heads of the executed rebels were then set upon pikes and exhibited in all of the towns between London and Glasgow in a procession along the "high road" (the most important road), while the relatives of the rebels walked back along the "low road" (the ordinary road traveled by peasants and commoners)."

By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond
Where me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomond.

Chorus:
O you’ll tak’ the high road and I’ll tak’ the low road
And I’ll be in Scotland afore yeFor me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o’ Loch Lomond.

‘Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen
On the steep, steep sides o’ Ben Lomond
Where deep in purple hue, the hieland hills we view
And the moon comin’ out in the gloamin’.

Chorus

The wee birdies sing and the wild flowers spring
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping
But the broken heart, it kens nae second spring again
Tho’ the waeful may cease frae their greeting.

heres a poor quality stream of an awesome rendition of this song by Runrig.

Char Bee Hoon

Spent a good part of the day at Mix and Mash, Cook and Dash. My team consisted of Charlie, Andrea, Natalie and Sharon and we were tasked to make Char Bee Hoon. So we sliced and diced, cut and chopped all the ingredients and fried up a big tray of Bee Hoon. Very proud of the dish haha. It was a great evening just eating and milling around. Got to know the NS cell guys better - David, Joseph, Chris. Might join em to cycle one of these days.

Went to Haato at Ridgewood to meet up with Jon and gang to end the evening. Happy Birthday bro! Look forward to buying you dinner hahaha. Best part, i took the MRT home man, never cab lor!

The Good Shepherd

“I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock. The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep.

I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep. I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd.

“The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again. No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”

Poem for a Sleepless Night

TO THE VIRGINS, TO MAKE MUCH OF TIME.
by Robert Herrick

GATHER ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old time is still a-flying :
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer ;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may go marry :
For having lost but once your prime
You may for ever tarry.
